Paumanok's Riesling Is Well Recommended
Riesling, one of the world's grand grapes, is also among
the most misunderstood. For many, riesling still means
overly sweet German wine. But it's much more, whether
vinified dry or not.

Paumanok Vineyards in Aquebogue makes both styles
with panache. Winemaker Charles Massoud has produced
400 cases of dry riesling and 800 cases of semi-dry riesling
from the 1998 vintage. Each wine is about $14 per bottle.

Massoud's dry riesling is especially recommended. It's
floral, fruity, youthful, very attractive. You can expect the
wine to improve over the next year. Enjoy it with finfish,
particularly trout and the like, and lighter chicken dishes.
The semi-dry riesling is more floral and has pleasing suggestions
of peach. The wine pairs well with ham and loin of pork.
